A group of pilings lashed together is known as a "dolphin". They are used as moorages, to protect wharves and docks, and, where logging takes place, as storage for log booms. They are ubiquitous anywhere that water is used for work and the bottom is soft enough for driving pilings. The top of this one was level with the dock so it made it easy to get a good shot...
